the religion of fashion

I've got to say my addiction to shoes have been absurd. Forget the clothes! The shoes make the outfit. I was love sick over a pair of boots, but as soon as I had them in my possession (I'm now a proud owner of Isabel Marant boots), I fell in love with something new - DVF Rebels

Will this cycle of shoe craving to shoe savings fund to shoe buying to new shoe craving ever end? I've asked myself this many times and have come to a realization.

I am here to share my enlightenment with you as the great Siddhartha once taught (with a minor tweak).

4 Noble Truths (of Fashion)

1. Dukkha: Life is suffering.

I suffer because, plain and simply, I can't buy out the entire women's department at Barneys...

2. Tanha: Cravings and desires cause suffering because pleasure is impermanent.

... seasonally.

3. Nirvana: There is an end to suffering; liberation.

The only ounce of liberation I feel is after making a purchase. If you too, feel that same old "good feeling", also known as the shopper's high, then try online shopping. You get the first high after confirming the order. The second high comes a few days later when the Fed-Ex guy leaves you the box at the front door.

4. Eightfold Path: The means to reach nirvana.

Truth be told, actual nirvana - breaking the continuous cycle of desiring pleasure -  for a fashion addict, is unattainable.

So there it is.
Hope you too have reached enlightenment.

strangers

I often wonder if the people who have a presence in my life today, were once strangers I've encountered a time before.

Two years ago, I documented a women's homeless shelter and attempted to communicate what I observed through the lens of a 35mm camera and film. I met people I never would have encountered in my natural environment and captured some great moments though it was rare RARE.

I met a woman. She was quite large in stature. Along with her dreadlocks, her jewelry made her memorable. Her spirituality captivated me, so I took a photo (shown below is a poor photo taken on camera of the actual print displayed at the exhibit). Oddly enough, as we were on the way to Target this weekend, I saw her standing on the street with a bag.

So it made me think.

first breeze

Today, I felt Fall's first breeze. It's still scorching out, but the warm breeze brought about a hope that this profuse sweating will soon come to an end. It also indicates that my sweaters will come out of hiding and 85% of my income will go towards my boot "investment".

love sick.

Is it possible to be love sick over a pair of shoes?
If you're ailing over a pair of Isabel Marant Dicker boots, then yes, it is possible.

Better known as the 'Kate Bosworth boots' - I'd like to call them 'Impossible to Find Anywhere boots' because they're virtually sold out everywhere - I'm willing to take these boots in whatever color I can get my hands on.

mellow

"Mellow doesn't always make for a good story, but it makes for a good life."
-Anne Hathaway

I read this quote it the latest Harper's Bazaar (Aug/ '11) upon discovering this about myself: my mellow-ness is probably mistaken as boring .

finally.

For the last month, I was given the amazing opportunity to work on a fashion story with the Managing Editor at JEZEBEL. Aside from all the events and marketing aspect of my internship, I was excited that I could work on other things relating to fashion and editorial. It's a much sweeter deal when you don't expect to be credited for your work, but Lisa was sweet enough allowing me to work alongside her guidance and credit me for this spread. So here it is, the finish product as seen in the May Issue (with MY name on it!!!):

when ebonie goes away, ivory comes out to play.

I had no choice other than to bounce back from my 100+ degree Monday fever and make it into my internship today for12hr Tuesday. The Atlantan celebrated it's 5th Anniversary tonight in Downtown Atlanta, and although I was working most of the time, I enjoyed the evening.

My boss placed me as point-person for the miniature fashion "presentation". At one point she came over to me and told me not to look so miserable. So I decided to replace my default sourpuss face with something more... happy - that does not come naturally. I should try and smile more often.

Side-note: If I'm not smiling, I look miserable. If I'm not talking, I appear miserable. It's my default face - doesn't mean I'm unhappy.

I had to leave ebonie at home. When in loss of your partner in crime, find a new one. The other interns and I made the most of our free time at the event and here are the results. Our hard work paid off and all four of us scored a photo with James Blunt and Christina Perri, thanks to our Marketing Director.

straight man's guide to fashion: barney's.

 True conversation.

man: Barney's is not just retail dear.
woman: So what is it?
man: It's more of a lifestyle
              Truth be told.
              Hip, but not hipster.
              Suave, but not quite debonair.
It's a beautiful balance of trendy with ergonomical value.
              Really a nice store :)
              I like that place.

I got fashion-schooled by a man.

today was a fairytale.

I have yet to really share my internship experiences on my blog. I currently intern in the Marketing department for JEZEBEL Magazine in Atlanta, which is a part of Modern Luxury. Recently, I've been lucky enough to be given the opportunity to help one of the editors on a story she's working on. I'm usually there 3 days a week, about 7-8 hours a day. I wish I blogged about my experiences in New York because there were many great stories to tell and plenty days full of crazy. Better now than never, I suppose.

Today was intense.

Here's a log of my day. I got the idea from ELLE, when I read their special edition issue.

7AM:  ::Alarm:: - I get out of bed, turn on the lights, turn on the morning news, get back into bed and sleep.

8AM:  Still groggy. I think I'll sleep an extra hour.
8:30: Nope.

9AM: Quick morning routine. Grey tights or black tights? (on) Grey. (off). Black (on)
9:20: Keys? Check. iPhone? Check. Ebonie? Check. Off I go.
9:40: Traffic?!
9:50: Oooo - Chick-fil-A. Spontaneous drive-thru.
9:55: Why don't I have a straw for my drink???????

10AM: Running late for my meeting with invitation designer.
10:20: Good, I'm close. 2 minutes later - No. I'm not. Where is Howard Ave.??
10:23: Driving on Commerce Dr. towards E. Ponce. 'Maps' app.
10:25: Driving on Commerce Dr. towards W. Ponce. 'Maps' app is frozen.
10:27: Driving on Commerce Dr. towards E. Ponce. iPhone is frozen. "iPhone!!! I hate you."
10:35: Driving on Commerce Dr. towards W. Ponce. iPhone won't turn on.
10:38: "Finally!!! UGH! There's Howard Ave.!"
10:40: Meeting at Atlanta Wedding Loft.

11AM: On my way to the office.
11:15: WE BUY GOLD guy is dancing on Cheshire Bridge Rd. again in his tacky green outfit. He points at me and thrusts his pelvis, again. I laugh, again.
11:18: "OMFG, there's a praying mantis in my car!!!!" composure. "It's just a big green leaf, hehe..."
11:20: Arrive at Terminus 200 Parking Deck.
11:26: 10th Floor in the parking deck. (Yea, it takes 6 minutes).
11:30: Intern's Office holding 8 look books, 2 bags, a laptop, a huge knit sweater, my straw-less Chick-fil-A cup, while balancing in my heels.

12PM: Scrambling to finish up pulling looks for a story.
12:30: Re-vise 178 contacts.

1-2PM: Resume. Thank GOD for Print Screen, Ctrl C, Ctrl V. Thank GOD for Paint????
2:35: I have no knowledge in Men's Fashion! ::cut, paste, cut, paste, cut, paste::
2:59: Did I pee today?

3PM: Pow-wow with the editor. Yay! Success!
3:45: Frozen Yogurt! I can take a breather.

4PM: Did I say breather? I meant breathing hurts! ::cough, cough::
Still have 5983954385 more things to do.
4:15: Phone call 1. Phone call 2. Phone call 3. E-mail 1. E-mail 2 - I sent a message to my boss, where I signed her name. Hi K, blah blah blah blah. Thanks. -K. E-mail 3 - Hi K, blah blah blah, haha ha, sorry! - Ivory.
4:30: Working on task #5983954380

5:10PM: E-mail 4. OMG, I forgot to do task #5983900000. Oh well. Leave office.
5:21: On 6th floor of the parking deck.
5:24: Make it out of the parking deck.
5:30: Head over to Benetton at Phipps for my next job.

6:00-7:30PM: Fold. Fold. Fold. I should probably catch up to a couple e-mails while I'm here. Fold. Sell. Why is this lady telling me her life story? I don't get paid enough for this. Fold. Fold. Is he really trying to get my number in front of his mom? Fold. Fold. There's a customer.. oh, wait... nevermind. Fold. Fold.
8PM: Ooo. Free sushi from my manager. Nomnom :)

9PM: Leave work.
10PM: Hang 50+ article of clothing piled on my couch. Momma makes me dinner- oh, sweet momma!

11PM: Skype :)
12AM: Blog.
1AM: Sleep to Sex and the City

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT OF MY INTERNSHIP.

island nostalgia.

"You were bound to come back kiddo, this is your town."
-rm to moi.

confession.

My day was full of ever-so-lustful temptations when I nearly lost my mind on a shopping trip. Nearby spectators easily witnessed the twinkle in my eye, revealing my lust. Like a mad-woman, I swept through J.Crew grabbing a chambray top I've wanted for some time now. I was convinced I'd make that purchase but in the nick of time, my brutal memory ceased my impulse buy, reminding me -
I vowed not to shop for 3 months, just 4 days ago.

When in doubt, shop vicariously.

listen: fast car

Spending a lot of time alone at home has given me the chance to do things I used to do. For instance, I've picked up my acoustic guitar and have attempted to play again. I feel like I was much better at 16 than I am now, but I forgot how difficult it is to strum, sing and keep up with changing chords. I recently heard this cover of Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car" and thought it was beautiful and worth sharing.
